FORECAST TO MIDNIGHT Situation.—An intense depression is moving steadily north-eastwards towards the Chathams; a very cold, showery South-westerly airstream covers the country. Forecast; Canterbury, Marlborough and Nelson.— South-westerlies strong in many places and reaching gale force or above in some exposed coastal areas; very cold; showers of rain, hail or snow. Buller and Westland.—Strong gusty south-westerlies decreasing slowly; showery; some hail and also snow above 1000 ft but increasing fair periods about the coast during the day. Outlook.—All districts: fair.
