DIVORCE IN ITALY
Proposed Bill Under Fire (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) ROME, June 10. The proposed measure to make divorce legal in Italy was bitterly attacked by a leading woman deputy as “a move to undermine the family” when Parliament resumed its debate on the issue today. Mrs Maria Martini, representing the Christian Democratic Party, told the Chamber of Deputies (Lower House) that there had been at least 12 attempts to introduce legal divorce since the unity of Italy a century ago; but all had failed. “To defend the stability of the family and to fight against the intrusion of divorce does not mean reducing the scope of free choice,” she said. “Still less does it mean to oppose social and civil progress.” The Christian Democrats, the largest party in the Chamber, have seen their Socialist and Republican coalition partners desert them to join the Communists and Liberals on the divorce issue.
