Club Goes Out Of Existence
The records and assets of the Canterbury Amateur Athletic Club were handed over to the Canterbury centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association at a meeting last evening of the association’s executive.
It is believed that the club was formed in 1879 and it went into recess in 1961. It is also thought that the club was the first athletic body formed in Canterbury.
The chairman of the centre executive (Mr B. H. Kerr) said it was an occasion tinged with a good deal of sadness, , and it was anomalous that the club had found itself unable to carry on at a time when there was a strong interest in athletics in Christchurch.
The main reason for its failure, he said, was that the club had had no geographical area to draw upon for its supply of athletes. Before passing over the books, Mr N. A. Smith, a trustee of the club, read extracts from the minutes book of the early 1890 s. Two other trustees. Mr C. S. Thomas and Mr R. Gracie. also spoke on the history of the club and its more famous members in the early part of this century.
