Cheese Banned
The Italian Government has banned imports of a Scottish cheese because, it says, it plays havoc with human hormones and increases the birth-rate. The cheese comes from the island of Islay, and the Italians will not allow any more of it into the country without a certificate guaranteeing it free from oestrogen, a female sex hormone. It is news to the Scots that their cheese contains this hormone but, if their trade with the Italians is lucrative enough, they believe it should be fairly simple to eradicate any infected milk.—London, May 11.
