ADDINGTON MARKET Best Lambs And Prime Wethers Rise Again

Prime sheep and prime lambs continued to meet a strong demand at the Addington market yesterday. Wethers sold particularly well, with values showing a further improvement on last week’s rates.

The prime cattle yarding, at less than 300 head, was the smallest for a considerable time, and good quality steers and heifers Showed a worthwhile rise on recent rates. Even cows, which had been in heavy supply during the previous three weeks, were firmer.

Vealers sold steadily, with rates mainly unchanged; dairy cows had a buoyant market, with a cow realising $204, while the fat pig market reached its peak. Under competition from a North Island buyer, baconers sold to $46.90.

Prime Lambs At 1755 head, the prim* lamb yarding was SSS fewer than last week. Summer-shorn Romneys made up th* bulk of the entry, and quality was mainly average. The market was again a very good one. Light-weight lambs were fully firm on last week's good sale, while butchers’ lambs improved 20c to 30c.

Prime Sheep Entries in the prime sheep section rose from 2060 last week to 3340. There was again a sizeable selection of wethers, and a plentiful supply of ewes. Two-tooth were forward in quite large numbers. The market was again a very good one for vendors. Ewes continued to sell steadily with regular sales at 35 or more, and wethers firmed 30c to 40c with regular sales at more than 38. Two-tooth ewes also changed hands at 38.

Prime Cattle At 287 head, the prime cattle offering was 125 fewer than last week. It was the shortest yarding for some weeks, being at least 100 short of trade requirements. Steers were forward in fair numbers but cows and heifers were in short supply. Reflecting the shorter entry, the market showed a rise on last week’s rates. Good quality steers and heifers firmed by 34 to 36 a head, and cows improved by 02. There was little change for plainer cattle, or any that were unfinished. Dairy Cattle A. small offering of dairy cattle—five heifers and two cows —met a buoyant sale, with values rising again on t'he good rates of last week. The pick of the heifers sold from 3172 to 3194. with others from 376 to 3106. An Ayrshire cow, due to third calf, sold at 0204, the highest price paid for a cow at Addington for a considerable time, and a Friesian realised 3146. In addition to the usual dairy

cattle offering, a herd of . Jersey and Jersy cross springcalving cows and heifers was offered. These were in light to medium condition, and prices ranged from $43 to $6l. Vealers Vealers showed little change on last week for an entry of 135 vealers, although competition was a little better. Medium quality vealers and medium calves made up the bulk of the entry. There was not the usual Supply of good calves, and large vealers were also forward In small numbers only. The yarding, . however, was sufficient for the trade's requirements. Best vealers sold from 375 to 380, with odd exceptional sales to 396; medium sold from $66 to 372, and lighter from 356' to 364. The best of the calves sold from 348 to 354 with odd sales to 358, medium from 340 to 344, and smaller from 532 to 338. Bulls Thirteen bulls were offered, and most of them were light to medium weights. A Friesian fetched top price of 3198, and there were sales of beef Shorthorns at 3168 and 3161. Average Aberdeen Angus and Friesian bulls sold from 3100 to 3140, with small beasts down to 360. Fat Pigs Fat pigs were yarded in smaller numbers, and butchers’ porkers were in short supply.
