Busy Rugby Week
Although some members felt that three games in six days would impose a strain on the players involved, the management committee of the Canterbury Rugby Union last evening fixed June 4 as the date of the senior representative trial match. The Town-Country game will be played on June 2 and there will be club matches on June 7. However, there will be no club fixtures on May 31, the day of the Wales-New Zealand test match at Lancaster Park. The date for the trial game was requested by the Canterbury selectors (Dr J. D. Stewart and' Mr M. J. Dixon). After watching the TownCountry match at Lancaster Park and the trial game at Rugby Park, they will be well armed to choose the Canterbury A team. The first assignments for the representative side will be games against Mid-Canter-bury at Ashburton on June 25 and against Wellington at Wellington on June 28. Rogradod.—N. G. Gow and J. McG. Brydon (both ot Lincoln College), and N. Smith (Meri-
vale-Papanui), were all regraded from senior to junior.
Wrong Code.—The Christ* church club complained about the state of balls at Lancaster Park. One was so round that ft looked more like a basketball, the club claimed. “They played like girls, too/* quipped Nr S. R. Southall.
Youth Tournament. —. The Junior Advisory Board is to sound out other unions on the possibility of holding a South island under-16 tournament at Christchurch in August, 1970. Roll Close.—So great has been the response to the appeal for members that the Canterbury Rugby Referees’ Association has closed its roll, Mr R. H. Bull told the meeting. The association, he said, was very strong in first and second-year referees.
