Meat Board Policy
Sir,—Once again Sir John Ormond has castigated export freezing companies for not paying enough to farmers—this in a year when farmers have consistently received more for lamb than in past seasons. And to placate some vociferous farmers in the north he threatens an inquiry at the end of the season. Such words are easily spoken when you do not carry the great financial risk. There was no comment from Sir John Ormond recently when Smithfield prices fell below cost; nor have we heard from him on the continuing lack of success of the Meat Board’s brain child, the Meat Export Development Company, which markets lamb in North America. After living abroad for some years I could suggest that an inquiry should be held into the way in which the Meat Board spends the money it has levied from farmers.—Yours, etc., G. A. NORTHCOTE.
