Superannuation
Sir, Congratulations to Varian J. Wilson for opening up a broadside on the humiliations and injustice relative mainly to the progressive destruction of purchasing power of superannuation, 17 nations maintain purchasing power but successive New Zealand Governments refuse to consider this vital necessity to maintain living standards and morale of superannui-.
tants. There are banks and other organisations which have adjusted their superannuation allowances. On the revenue side the Government conveniently ignores that officers are compelled to pay into both superannuation and social security but can collect only one allowance, which is severely taxed. Also, the continual substantial increase in revenue-producing subscribers; in one government department alone the staff has increased from 9000 in 1916 to 31,000 in 1969, and will continue to increase to meet public demand for expanding services. There are fewer than 26,000 surviving superannuitants in the whole of New Zealand, with a population of nearly three million.—Yours, SUPERANNUITANT. May 11, 1969.
