Long-service Jewel
A long-service jewel was presented to a 93-year-old man at the seventieth annua! session of the national division of the Sons of Temperance Friendly Society in Christchurch on Saturday. He is Mr A, Hitchings, who has been a member of the society for 76 years. The order’s highest award, the past most worthy patriarch’s jewel, and a bar for additional service, were presented to Mr W. L. Grenfell. More than $4OOO had been paid out to. members during the year for sickness, funeral, and other benefits, said the secretary (Mr H. M. Tomlinson). Assets of the society represented an average of $284 a member, although $550 had been paid out to assist aged members.
Officers elected were: Most Worthy Patriarch, Mr N. R. James; associate, Mr R. H. Tizard; chaplain, Mr F. H. Baird; conductor, Mr N. G. D. Green; sentinel, Mr J. N. Moore; superintendent, Mr F. Billcliff; secretary, Mr H. M Tomlinson: treasurer, Mr S. J. Bultitude; director of ceremonies, Mr W. L. Grenfell; trustees, Messrs E. J. Kiddey, F. W. Hitchings, and J. H. G. Shaw; auditors, Messrs F. H. Baird and W. L. Grenfell: bylaws committee, Messrs J. H. G. Shaw, R. R. Kiddey, and H. N. Taylor; appeals commitee, Messrs N. R. James, R. L. Walker, S. H. Clothier, W. Fergie, and H. N. Taylor.
