CHARACTER IN YOUTH
Conference To Be Held
Teachers from primary and secondary schools in Auckland, Waikato, Wellington and Dunedin will head a conference in Wellington from May 15 to 19 to attempt to find ways of building character in youth. Parents and students will also take part in the conference which will be open to the public. The theme of the conference, which will be opened by the Minister of Agriculture and Science (Mr Taiboys), will be “Education’s Giant Task.” The organisers. Moral Re-armament, say the aim is “to learn how student, parent and teacher ean together build the character needed for the new civilisation.” The Leader of the Opposition (Mr Kirk) will also speak at the opening of the conference; the Minister of Education (Mr Kinsella) will address the conference on “Aims of education apart from the intellectual”; and Mr N. A. Collins, national secretary of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants, will speak on behalf of the Federation of Labour on “What industry expects from education.” The conference will discuss liberal studies courses, freedom and authority and mass media.
