Internal Loan For Education Suggested
(New Zealand Press Association)
TAURANGA, May 12.
One way of identifying education as an investment for the future would be for the Government to raise an internal education development loan, Mr J. L. Hunt, member of Parliament for New Lynn, said in Tauranga today.
Mr Hunt was guest speakerat the annual regional conference of the Bay of Plenty Post-Primary Teachers’ Association.
He said that the loan, noninflationary and requiring little use of overseas funds,
could be used to set educational development on progressive lines again and would truly establish education as a top priority in the eyes of New Zealanders. “I feel that the P.P.T.A. may at last have realised the importance of involving itself in the political process, and I appeal to you all to involve yourselves in the political process as the only effective way to right your grievances,” he said. “For too long teachers have kept too quiet and received too little. The election offers a golden opportunity to demonstrate that teachers, by making education a vital political issue, are aware of the importance of the job they do,” he said.
