Music And The Arts Print Council’s Show Opens

The Print Council’s biennial exhibition, which is to tour New Zealand before selected works from it are sent overseas later this year, opened in the Auckland City Art Gallery last week. The exhibition comprises 75 prints, selected from more than 200 which were submitted to the council. After showing in Auckland, the exhibition will go to the other main centres, while an identical collection, divided into two shows, will go to galleries in smaller centres. Later the council will select what it considers to be the best works and will send them to Australia, together with a selection from the 1988 20/20 exhibition in Christchurch, for showing in the sculpture centre in Canberra and in other Australian galleries. This is the second major exhibition sponsored by the Print Council, Which was set up in 1967 to promote and support printmaking as a creative art. It now has a membership of 150, and expects to double this as a result of its increased acti, vity this year. One of its activities is the commissioning of print editions for distribution to its members, and tbs year works have been obtained from Ted Dutch, Helen Reid, Marilynn Webb and Mervyn Williams, of Auckland, and Bonnie Quirk and Gary Tricker, of Wellington. Mervyn Williams is the winner of the Samakand award of $2OO given by an anonymous Auckland businessman, for the best group of prints in its exhibition.

The award was intended as a recognition of the quality of a printmaker, rather than the quality of any individual print.
