Water Polo Clinic

Thirteen of the most promising young water polo players in Canterbury have been named by the secretary of the New Zealand Water Polo Board (Mr D. F. Stewart), to attend the 1969 Rothman’s Coaching Clinic. The clinic, to be held at the Moana Pool in Dunedin, between May 17 and 21, is the third to be held by the national body and the second in the South Island.

The players selected are: D R. Barton, M. C. Bennett, P. Butler. G. Campbell, D. Harliwich, S. Johnston, D. R. Mackay, S. G. Mason, P. Mulligan, M. Shilltoe, R. Tweedie, P. Ussher, P, Yardley.

Both Mulligan and Yardley represented Canterbury under--18 at the national championships and these two appear to have the strongest chance of selection in the team selected at the conclusion of the clinic. The director of the course is the New Zealand coach (Mr W. H. Dyson), and the assistant director Is the national selector (Mr B. E. Tremaine). The course they have developed for the five days of the clinic includes practical instruction in swimming, ball skills, team tactics, rules tests, theoretical instruction. films of overseas teams playing and training, and numerous matches.

Canterbury will also be represented by the Jellie Park coach, Mr A. Chappell, who has been named to attend the course in a coaching capacity.
