London Wool Sold By Sample
Some wools were offered by sample at last Thursday’s London wool sale.
Th"' Canterbury, West Coast and Marlborough representative of London -Wool Brokers (N.Z.), Ltd, Mr J. K, Richardson, said at the weekend that selected Merino, halfbred and crossbred wools suitable for the combing trade had been offered by this method. The samples of up to 51b had been drawn from the bales in the warehouses and then displayed in a sample room in stainless steel baskets with a ticket attached indicating the lot number. Mr Richardson said that the introduction of the system, which is believed to involve savings in costs both for growers and buyers, had been the climax of about five years work.
The trade, he said, was happy about the system and buyers had stipulated the types that they would buy by .this method.
Eventually it would be the method by which the bulk of greasy wools would be sold, he said. According to advice Mr Richardson has received about the sale, at which prices were generally sharply higher than at the last sale in March, the offering by sample was most successful, and the wool met excellent competition.
Apart from the saving in handling involved in the system, buyers did not have to go round several warehouses in doing their valuing, he said. All of the samples could be inspected in one room.
