Luminous Street Signs
Sir,—Lack of street signs in Christchurch (and the position of some means the risk of a crick in the neck), slows traffic. Many street corners are unnamed. Visitors and even local residents have to crawl or stop, and often have to make U turns when looking for street names and numbers. In Paris street names are legibly shown on all four comers so that motorists can read them while driving by at a reasonable speed. The reply to Frederick A. Bull by the City Engineer is this week’s funny story: “The City Council has carried out a programme of street name replacement which is now completed.” The Automobile Association and the Taxi Proprietors’ Association should support the plaint of Frederick A. Bull, and request the City Council to erect street names on every street (luminous if possible), and to point out that little notice is taken of the by-law that house numbers must be visible from the street.— Yours, etc., SETH NEWELL.
