Security Service
Sir, —When the United States gave free rein to its security service (C.1.A.) it departed from its traditional system of “checks and balances.” Very quickly the tail began to wag the dog and policies emanating from the extreme Right had undue influence on the nation’s affairs. Internally they contributed to witch . hunting McCarthyism, an economy dominated by the armament industry, an extreme maldistribution of wealth, and ever-increasing civic discord. Externally there have been innumerable instances of unwarranted interference in the domestic affairs of other nations, support of the most corrupt dictatorships provided they were anti-Leftist in character, and a war condemned by most of mankind: a record not to be compared with the machinations of O.G.P.U. or Gestapo but nevertheless one we should not risk imitating by giving inadequately controlled licence to those who may have a proclivity to act as witch-doctors.—Yours, etc., SCRUTINEER.
