Tributes To Services
Tributes were paid to the services given to the district by Mr W. R. Oliver at a social evening at Hororata on Thursday. Mr Oliver, who retired from the Malvern County Council last October, was elected to the Selywn County Council in 1947, and was its chairman from 1935 until its amalgamation with Malvern in 1963. He became Malvern’s deputy chairman in 1965, and held this office until he retired last year.
Mr Oliver is a past-presi-dent of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association, and a foundation member and first president of the Hororata-Malvern subcentre of the R.S.A. He was a member of the rehabilitation committee. Speakers at the social were the Malvern County chairman (Mr C. O. Redfern), the Ellesmere County chairman (Mr W. E. Walker), Mr K. H. Jarman (R.S.A.), Mr T. C. Grigg (Agricultural and Pastoral Association) and Mr R F. White, on behalf of residents. Mr Oliver was presented with a coloured aerial photograph of the Hororata district.
