Soviet Ship On Ussuri

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter— Copyright)

MOSCOW, May 11.

A Russian naval vessel is moving up the Ussuri River on a voyage that will take it past Damansky Island, the scene of two fierce border clashes between China and the Soviet Union in March. Moscow Radio’s correspondent in Khabarovsk says that the unidentified vessel is making the first voyage of the year up the border river, bound for the small town of Iman, the nearest populated area to the island, which both countries claim as their sacred territory. China concedes that the Soviet Union has navigation rights along its own side of the Ussuri. During most of the 150-mile voyage, the Ussuri runs as a border river; and it is about 350 yards wide at the point where it is divided by Damansky (called Chen Tao by the Chinese). The river, frozen and covered in snow at the time of the border battles, was reported clean of ice at the end of last month.
