LONDON, May 11.
The Soviet Union has resumed sizeable arms shipments to Egypt, including the latest supersonic jets, according to diplomatic sources in London.
The resumption of the shipments, after an interval of many months coincided with the Middle East peace talks between representatives of the four Great Powers, the sources say.
A senior Communist diplomat said in response to reports of new arms shipments: “After all, the United States is supplying Phantom jets to
Israel that could even carry Israeli atom weapons, and Britain, in turn, is supplying Jordan with arms.”
The new Russian supplies are understood to include the Soviet supersonic SU7 allweather fighter-bomber. From Tel Aviv it is reported that Egypt and Israel battled across the Suez Canal with artillery and light weapons for almost 24 hours yesterday. It was one of the longest exchanges reported in the region since the months immediately after the 1967 Middle East war.
