Assault Repelled

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright/ SAIGON, May 11. North Vietnamese troops poured 300 rounds of mortar fire into a United States camp early today and then attacked it, killing 11 Americans and wounding 25. A military spokesman said that the assault was beaten back by infantrymen in the camp, 13 miles south-west of the city of Pleiku, in the Central Highlands, and that 45 North Vietnamese dead were left behind. The initial mortar barrage ploughed into the American soldiers shortly after 2 a.m. and was followed by a wave of North Vietnamese troops throwing explosive charges as they tried to penetrate the camp perimeter. Fierce fighting raged for more than six hours as helicopter gunships and heavy artillery support was called in by the defenders. Tank units reinforced the infantrymen shortly before dawn, and the attackers withdrew soon after 8 a.m.
