$3384 For Centre
About $3384 was raised yes- 1 terday from the annual pro-1 duce market of the North ’ Canterbury centre of the Red 1 Cross Society, held in the 1 Horticultural Hall and from * a stall in Cathedral Square. ‘ This is about $630 less than < was raised last year at the < market, which was held in j conjunction with the centre’s annual street appeal. The 1 centre’s secretary (Mr R. J. < Lipscombs) said last evening that yesterday’s result was 1 very pleasing. J 60 m.p.h. Roads i Not many of the district roads except State highways and Telegraph Road would qualify for the new speed limit of 60 miles an hour because a three-mile straight was the minimum, said Cr A. D. Worsfold at a meeting of the Malvern County Council I yesterday. The engineer (Mr ; W. J. Bevis) was asked to report on suitable sections of road. Birds Found Five birds including a diving petrel, a sooty shearwater and three fluttering shearwaters have been found washed ashore on Christchurch beaches during the recent bad weather. Mr B. N. Norris, an honorary wildlife ranger at Sumner, said yesterday that it was important that persons finding any more of these birds take them to,a high plaee, such as the cliff at Scarborough, where they could take off. They were unable to fly from the beach, he said. Persons finding these birds may get in touch with Mr Norris at 53 Head Street, Sumner, telephone Sumner 6998. Fewer Fires “This can be attributed to the demise of the steam loco- • motive,” said the Darfield Fire Brigade’s chief officer (Mr A. T. Holland) when he reported to the Malvern County Council yesterday that the 48 calk answered last year were eight fewer than the average for the last three years.
