Dock Trouble
The sl3om British container ship service to Australia struck another setback when dockers refused to handle the first ship due at Southampton. There is already a Tilbury ban on the 29,150 ton Encounter Bay, and now the Southampton dockers say they will not have the port used for “convenience” reasons while the Tilbury trouble, over pay rate, continues. The Encounter Bay was due to arrive at Southampton this week-end from her maiden voyage from Australia, but her owners, Overseas Containers, are now switching her to Antwerp, where she will begin unloading on Monday. The loading of the Encounter Bay with British exports for Australia was switched to Rotterdam two months ago because of the Tilbury ban.
