Transplant Surgery
A judge has called for new laws to protect transplant surgeons from civil or criminal legal action. Lord Justice Davies told the Royal Society of Medicine in London that the present laws did not clearly specify when a transplant operation became illegal. He added that consent did not absolve a surgeon who could foresee that a living donor’s health might, be endangered. Lord Justice Davies, who ? resided over the Great rain Robbery trial, . said new legislation should be brought in quickly to ensure that transplant operations in themselves did not make the surgeon liable for prosecution.
He also called for a legal definition of death which was clinically acceptable.
