Gardener’s Query

We planted two Clematis Montana rubens last spring and they have grown proliflcally through summer. Now I read In a magazine garden page “cut clematis to within 18in of the ground (during May).” This would mean that, there would be little new growth by the time flowering starts. We' had hoped there would be an attractive display around the terrace on wrought iron. I would be pleased for your comment J.E. (Christ- . church). Clematis which flower on previous season’s growth should be pruned immediately after flowering has ceased in the spring. This enables new growth to be made in the intervening period before the next flowering season. If pruning is delayed until winter much, if not all, the flower-bearing wood is lost. The extent of pruning is dictated by the coverage desired but it is advisable always to do some each year so as to maintain a reasonably tidy growth habit
