Backfire Fancied At Gisborne
"The Press” Special Service HASTINGS. Excellent trackwork by the Hastings galloper. Backfire, this week has consolidated his position as favourite for the Murupara Handicap, first leg of the T.A.B. double at the Poverty Bay meeting on Saturday. Backfire ran fifth in the Te Mahanga Handicap at Hastings last month and has had time to freshen for his Gisborne engagement. The field for the Murupara Handicap, apart from Backfire, is not particularly itrong. Papeete and Llanace might prove the best of Backfire's rivals. Papeete’s recent form has not been outstanding, but earlier In the season he beat a good field In the Tauranga City Handicap. Llanace was third in Intermediate class at Waipa recently and might be capable of Improvement. The Midway Handicap, second leg of the T.A.B. double, Is more open. The top-weight. Black Wlteh. a fast front-runner which has won six rapes this season, seems the best prospect, although she has not raced since winning at Wairoa in February.
