RACING Every Post Is Obvious Choice For Cup

Every Post is a ready-made favourite for the Amberley Cup, the first leg of the Amberley Racing Club’s “straight” double at Rangiora on Saturday.

He won the Nelson Cup two starts back, then ran a creditable fourth in the Gloaming Stakes at Trentham. Meldie, which finished second to Every Post in the Nelson Cup, won the Waterloo Handicap at Trentham on Wednesday.

Every Posts’s Nelson Cup victory was his second in open company. The other was at the North Canterbury club’s meeting at Rangiora just before Easter. Consistent

Sailing Home is a second three-year-old with much to commend her chance on form. At her last start she was third behind Gay Gabador and Kalott in the Canterbury Jockey Club's Great Autumn Handicap. Earlier at the meeting she was fourth over a mile and a quarter in the race won by Sandbank. Sandbank carried Sst 41b in his latest victory and has Bst 121 b in the Amberley Cup but he is built to carry weight and soft footing will not show him at a disadvantage. Tumble has already won the Amberley Cup twice and was runner-up to Kalimera in another. He has done his latest racing as a sprinter, and his best effort was a fourth—he lost that position when his rider failed to weigh in over six furlongs at Rangiora in March. Stable Bracket The Riccarton trainer, J. R. Shaw, who won this race last year with Royal Blue, has both Aeolian and Chilli Bean to carry the Williamson colours this year. Aeolian has the more attractive form. He dead-heated with Donald Mac over a mile on the second day of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s autumn meeting, and was a stronglyfinishing sixth in the Waltham Handicap on the final day of the meeting. There will be set-backs for form backers if any of the others win. Spruit Fancies Time and Tide, Gay Doctor and Cosmetic are a fancied

trio for the second leg, the Starky Memorial; and Billy Joe, Lady Fort, and Senator Jack also have form to commend their chances. Time and Tide and Gay Doctor can both lift their form when the tracks ease. Time and Tide did that so effectively when he secured an easy track at Riccarton last November that he won a high-weight by nine lengths.

On the same programme Gay Doctor ran third to the talented sprinter. Red Chips, and Pango in the Members’ Handicap. He won at Wingatui in December, and a good recent performance on his record was his fourth in the Waltham Handicap at Riccarton last month.

Cosmetic is a light-weight speedster with a liking for easy footing, and should be a formidable contender from an advantageous barrier position.

Billy Joe won hands down at Rangiora in March. Then he ran fifth in the Great Easter, and a distant fourteenth in the Waltham Handicap.

Lady Fort was runner-up to Billy Joe at Rangiora on March 31 and has since improved a serviceable record with a win at Blenheim and a second at Nelson.

Senator Jack is adept on soft tracks and any further deterioration in the track could offset his wide barrier position. New Mint is another mudlark, and has improved with his recent gallops, but Hombre is essentially a top-of-the-ground perfformer.
