ROOF LIFTS IN WIND
Schoolchildren Sent Home (N.Z. Press Association) MASTERTON, May 8. The 380 children at the Hollaway Street Primary School, Carterton, were given an unexpected holiday today when gale force winds lifted part of the roof from the school. About a dozen sheets of roofing iron were torn from the building during the early morning in wind gusts of up to 75 miles an hour. One piece of iron was tossed an estimated 90 feet. As conditions in the school grounds worsened and the gale showed no signs of abating an urgent appeal was broadcast for parents to collect their children from the school.
