Leper Hospital Improvements

A new operating theatre at the Godden Memorial Hospital in the New Hebrides has given more scope for surgical treatment of the results of leprosy, and in particular tendon transplants for foot drop, a common complication with this disease. This was one of several capital works undertaken by the hospital with funds received from the Lepers’ Trust Board in the last year, the board announced yesterday

Other improvements paid for-by the board’s allocation included a filtration and chlorination plant for the hospital’s wateb supply, a solar water-heating system for the operating theatre, a new generator unit and a house for the laboratory technician who has just returned to the island after a course at the Suva Medical School.

The hospital, which treated 188 patients for leprosy during the year, will conduct a leprosy survey through some Areas of the New Hebrides this year.
