Christchurch R.S.A. To Extend Rooms

After more than 10 years of discussions, the Christchurch Returned Services’ Association has decided to build an extension to its clubrooms.

The president of the association (Mr J. Green) announced last evening that at a special meeting on Wednesday night the executive approved plans of the extension and the successful tender of $38,500, submitted by M. J. Graham.

Mr Green said that the single floor extension would be built on the Armagh Street frontage. It would have a floor area of about 3000 sq. ft and be constructed of concrete block and brick. Provision had been made for foundations for two floors which could be added.

The acceptance of the tender is subject to financial arrangements being ratified at a special meeting in the clubrooms on May 15. The meeting will be asked to empower

the executive to raise, by loan or mortgage, $50,000 for the alterations.

The ground floor extension will provide for a new office block, additions to the bar lounge, a large television and reading lounge, and a room to be used either by returned servicewomen or the executive.

Mr Green said nothing had been decided about the existing building which was built in 1922. The only change would be that the secretary’s temporary office would be altered to make way for a large supper room. Subject to financial arrangements being approved next Thursday work on the extensions will begin immediately and completion is expected by the end of November.

Mr Green said that new building plans, plans for additions to the existing building, and a variety of other ideas had been considered by executives for the last 10 years.

The approved extension would double the floor area of the existing clubrooms. At one stage new multistorey clubrooms were considered, but with the amount of excess office accommodation

in the city it was decided the proposal should not be proceeded with, he said.
