S.A. Secret Service

<N Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) JOHANNESBURG, May 7.

A new secret service bureau is to be set up in South Africa accountable only to the Prime Minister (Mr John Vorster). It will be led by a 53-year-old policeman, Lieutenant-General Hendrik J. Van Den Berg, a close friend of the Prime Minister, the New York Times News Service reports. General Van Den Berg is Mr Vorster’s adviser on security and is rated the second most powerful man in the country. Legislation to set up the new bureau, to be called the Bureau for Public -Security, was published today. It will not be subject to Treasury approval for its spending nor —in common with secret service organisations throughout the world—will it have to divulge in Parliament such information as how many operators are working for it.
