TROTTING Glamour Expected To Win Again At Oamaru

Glamour should make a bold bid to give her Riccarton breeder, Mr B. Grice, his first win in the Oamaru Juvenile Stakes on Saturday. Mr Grice has won almost every other classic race in the South Island, but success has escaped him at Oamaru.

Glamour has had two wins so far and has shown herself to be one of the top pacers of her age. Her main mission will be the New Zealand Sapling Stakes at Ashburton on May 31 and this might be her last start before that important race. Glamour, one of the growing list of winners from the first crop sired by Bachelor Hanover, was a last-start winner at Methven on April 19 She started from 12 yards in an unwieldly field and won

most impressively from Local Rose after coming from midfield starting the last half mile. Aztec Prince has shown considerable ability and this bracketed mate of Glamour will only have to reproduce one of his top runs at trials to be a threat However, he has failed badly in two race starts and will have to be taken on trust. Berkleigh, which will be one of Glamour’s main rivals in the Sapling Stakes, should run her close at Oamaru. This speedy son of Johnny Globe and Fifth Brigade, has had a win and a second from his only race starts. He was successful at Addington Raceway in March and on the same course on Anzac Day he was making ground at a great rate when second, two lengths from Bravine, at the end of a fast 10 furlongs. Berkleigh is still inclined

to race greenly and at his last start it was only close to home that he started to pace with much dash. It was a most impressive run and he should have improved sufficiently to take full advantage of his favourable draw of “No. 2.

Bravine, from J. D. Litten’s West Melton team, is very speedy, but she has not drawn well and will start

from the second line. She is capable of a bold showing, but will need luck to escape trouble in the early rush for positions. She was most impressive when she won at Addington recently and might be a threat to Glamour and Berkleigh. Bad Draw Rossini would have been one of the popular fancies had he drawn the front line. He has drawn No. 20 and has practically no chance of being elevated to the front. Rossini has great speed and at his last start he was third behind Sam Tryax and Bravine in the New Zealand Welcome Stakes on April 5. Rossini has sufficient ability to take a prominent part in the finish. Rossini’S part-owner and trainer, M. Holmes, has driven the winners of almost all important races in New Zealand, but, like Glamour’s driver, R. Young, he has yet to win the Oamaru Juvenile Stakes.

C. C. Devine will be trying for his third win in the race with Fortunate. He produced Vivanti to win in 1950 and Bass Strait in 1965. Fortunate will have a great chance. He finished third to Bravine at Addington Raceway on Anzac Day and if he races with the same dash in this race, he will take beating. Fortunate is usually a reliable beginner and from No.

3 at the barrier he should be prominently placed throughout the race. Boy Friend and Walk Alone are two other winners in the field. Boy Friend is raced by the Oamaru trainer, F. Oliver. He has not raced since he was pulled up in the New Zealand Welcome Stakes. He broke at the start and finally ran into the back of Friendly Jane’s sulky near the two furlongs and was pulled up. Boy Friend is a very smart young pacer well capable of making amends in this race. Walk Alone has been a big disappointment sipce he won at Forbury Park in the autumn. In most of his races he has finished nearer the rear than the lead and It is difficult to imagine him winning. Bright Adios has failed badly in two starts since he finished second to Berkleigh at Addington Raceway in March. He made the pace and then faded badly at Methven last month, but might do better at Oamaru where the track might not be so test ing.

Local Rose has a useful turn of speed and after her Methven placing she must be considered as a place chance. She drew badly at Addington on Anzac Day and did not recover.

A win for any of the others would be a major surprise and Direct Return should be the pick of them. I
