Top Player Has Second Loss

The top-ranked Canterbury table tennis player, Lin Nan Ming (Avonside), lost his second singles match in inter-club competition this season in the fourth round matches played last evening. Last week, Ming lost to R. J. Scott (Wallabies), and last night he survived five match points in the third game before wilting to the perseverance of K. Cassidy (Linwood). Cassidy turned some tremendous drives from Ming and thoroughly deserved his win.

There were other upsets as representative players lost to unranked club players. M. R. Spinks (Hoon Hay) suffered his first loss of the season to R. J. Scott. Scott continues in his role of "giant-kiUer" and to the wins against Ming and Spinks he added another against J. Weir (Hoon Hay). A. L. Rutledge, playing in A grade for his first season, beat the experienced Canterbury representative, V. N. Brightwell, in three close games.

Hoon Hay, one of the leaders in the competition, had to tighten its play against Wallabies, which has not won a match this season. After four matches Wallabies led, 3-1, and Hoon Hay did not put the match beyond doubt until the eleventh contest, when Spinks beat M. A. Cox. Points after four rounds are: Hoon Hay, Avonside I 8, Selwyn, Linwood I, Rlccarton I 6, Avonside II 4, Dallington 2, Linwood 11, Rlccarton 11, Wallabies 0.
