Provision For Buying Land In City

A start on the improvement of Waltham Road between Moorhouse Avenue and Brougham Street, where it fits into what will be the junction of the northern and southern motorways, was authorised in Christchurch City Council reading estimates for this year which were approved by the No. 14 District Roads Council yesterday for National Roads Board sanction.

In supplementary items approved, $36,000 was provided for the Waltham Road work out of a total city council expenditure of $1.732m, and it was proposed that the board find $27,000. The whole job, spread over some years, is estimated to cost $310,000. Provision was made in the main city estimates for $42,000 for land purchases covered by stage 1 of the master traffic plan. The estimates listed Waltham Road, Antigua Street, Rossall Street, Ensors Road, Madras Street, Hills Road, Springfield Road and Barbadoes Street, and the board is asked to find $lB,OOO. In the supplementary list, $65,000 was allowed for the re-alignment of Rossall Street through to Strowan Road, involving the acquisition of property at the Leinster RoadWairarapa Terrace section. Half the cost will be met by the Waimairi County Council as the work is on the council’s boundary. Of $203,000 allowed for the council for major improvements, $84,000 is provided for work on the western section of the Fendalton-Avonside arterial road. The board is asked to find $63,000, and the total cost of the job is estimated at $160,000. In the county estimates, Ashley County’s plans to rebuild 10 bridges at a total cost of $112,000 were approved, the board being asked to find $79,000. It was unfortunate that the widening of the Selwyn River bridge on the Main South Road had been delayed to the point where it was likely that traffic would have to be di* verted through the riverbed during the winter, when flooding could be expected, said Mr R. C. Neville, at a meeting of the No. 14 District Roads Council yesterday. The meeting was told that the laminated wooden decking was now being prefabricated, but the District Commissioner of Works (Mr D. A. Lane) said that the job had to be done at the right time of year so that the wood could dry before treatment “We have been delayed right through,” he said. “I would say that there could be a record flood at almost any time of year.” Estimates before the meeting showed expenditure of *28,000 on the work to March 3, and provision was made for the completion cost of $70,000 in this year’s estimates.

The estimates for Paparua Countv. totalling $312,380. with $184,470 in subsidy and grant, included $25,000 for major improvements to Springs Road.
