NORTH ROAD LIGHTING
Criticism Of Delay
Delay by the Waimairi County Council in reaching a decision as to the type of lighting to be installed on the Cranford Street-Styx section of the Main North Road was criticised yesterday by the District Commissioner of Works (Mr D. A. Lane). He told the annual meeting of the No. 14 District Roads Council that' he, the executive and the National Roads Board were disappointed that there was still no decision, although the council was first asked for its preference in 1965.
“We have since then put money on the estimates year after year,” he said. “We have differences of opinion, but let's get on with the job ” The meeting approved of $20,000 being provided for the work in 1970-71 in the yellow-light sodium vapour lamps which are the National Roads Board standard.
The council last year agreed to pay the extra cost itself to install the white mercury vapour lamps, but subsequently rescinded the decision. The council is still making inquiries.
