Successful Debaters
Winner of the national Country Girls’ clubs debating contest in 1967, a team from the Oxford club has reached the South Island final in a similar contest this year. Taking the affirmative side in a South Island semi-final at Oxford recently, the home team beat Willowbridge, debating: “That the recent amendments to New Zealand divorce legislation are a threat to the stability of marriage.” The Oxford team of Mesdames Janet Skurr, Joan Werner, and Julie Philpott, who were in the New Zealand champion team in 1967, have been trained by Mrs W. S. Clifton-Mogg, formerly of Oxford and now of Christchurch.
