Baton Lecture?

Sir,—l must report a very strange scene at the final performance of the ballet, “Cinderella.” After the interval, the conductor of the orchestra took up his position as usual. He then treated his audience to a ten-minute harangue bn the case for civic support for the local orchestra. Whatever the merits of his case (and in my opinion they are many), he did it no justice at all by carrying on in this fashion. A few simple words would have sufficed. Indeed, most of the. audience no doubt already supported the idea.— Yours, etc., M. J. WALSH. April 29, 1969. [Mr Ashley Heenan, conductor of the orchestra, had no comment to make on the letter.]
