UNIVERSITY STAFF
Commonwealth Scheme
I A new scheme of fellowships has been initiated to build up qualified locally-born staff in Commonwealth universities outside Britain. T 1
'he scheme was proposed by Britain at the fourth Commonwealth education conference in Lagos last year. The annual report of the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission says that the Commonwealth academic staff fellowships are intended for job's of importance in universities in Commonwealth countries other than Britain. The scheme will begin this year with 10 awards in British universities. It is hoped this number will be increased gradually to a possible maximum of 50 a year, if a clear need for these awards is. shown.
The awards will be available normally at post-doctoral level for periods up to one year. They are intended for lecturers in universities in the developing Commonwealth who, by this training, says the commission, will be fitted for greater responsibilities. Similar fellowships in British universities already exist in the medical field.
