BREAK FROM UNION
Move By Air Engineers (N.Z. Prest Association) AUCKLAND, April 30. Air New Zealand engineers are considering breaking with the Engineering and Related Trades Union to form an aircraft workers’ association. They have set up a committee to examine the proposal, and have told the Minister of Labour (Mr Shand), the airline management, and the Auckland branch of the Engineering Union of their wants. A form for resignation from the Engineering Union has also been circulated, along with a recommendation to withhold payment of union fees. About 84 per cent of the line’s 550 member engineering section is reported to have signed the form. In addition, $450 has been contributed to help to cover expenses of the committee examining the aircraft workers* association scheme.
. the breakaway is the culmination of many months of dissent over the handling of aircraft workers’ affairs by the Engineering Union. The objective of the association would be to cover others employed within the industry besides the engineering section. It could also embrace workers for N.A.C. and smaller concerns.
