CRITICISM OF REPORT
‘Little Evidence Of Imagination’ rrtu AMOdatUm) WELLINGTON, April 29. The president of the Public Service Association (Mr R. F. Hannan) criticised today the report of the targets committee of the National Development Conference for its “adherence to traditional economic theories.” Many aspects of the report showed little evidence of initiative or imagination, he said. Wage and salary earners had good grounds to be concerned at suggestions that interest rates should be higher, that local body and Government chvges should be increased and that there should be a progressive shift towards indirect taxation. These would almost inevitably lead to increases in costs and prices. It was difficult to see how the committee could blandly state that it had proceeded on the assumption that there would be no price changes other than a 1 per cent a year rise in prices due to the working out of the effects of devaluation.
