Views On Control Of Tunnel Road

Alterations to the present system of traffic control on the Christchurch to Lyttelton tunnel road were opposed by the traffic committee of the Christchurch-Lyttelton Road Tunnel Authority, said the committee’s chairman (Mr L. G. Amos) at a meeting of the authority yesterday;

Verbal advice had been received that the National Roads Board had decided in principle that the approach road from Ferry Road to the toll plaza should be a motorway instead of a State highway, as previously decided. This would involve the control of the approach road being in the hands of the Ministry of Transport instead of the tunnel authority, Mr Amos said. The committee considered that the alteration would not be in the best interests of the authority and its patrons, and recommended that the authority make representations to the Minister of Works (Mr Allen) to ensure the authority remained the controlling authority, and that the approach road become a State highway as previously agreed. The authority had not yet received official notice in writing of the Roads Board move, said the chairman (Mr R. A. Witbrock).

He said that in the last year there had been only four

injury accidents on the road, and ,36 non-injury accidents. There had been 618 breakdowns, 160 cases of vehicles running out of petrol, 102 punctures and five fires.
