SPORT IN BRIEF

hole play-off by 11 strokes to 13.—Reuter, Nagoya.

KEEN TO TOUR The Olympic discus thrower, R. D. Tait, who has returned home from South Africa, said yesterday he was sure a South African athletic team would be keen to tour New Zealand next season. Tait competed in a series of meetings there. “I believe the South Africans would even pay their way out here,” said Tait. “The Ministry of Sport pours in plenty of finance and would probably subsidise a tour to New Zealand.” South Africa has several world-class athletes, including the sprinter, P. Nash, but was deprived of international competition because of the country’s apartheid policy.— N.Z.P.A., Auckland.

RECORD SWIM The Rotorua swimmer, I. N. Curry, a member of the New Zealand team in Canada, has lowered his best time for the 100 yards freestyle, in a short course pool, to 49sec.

Curry, one of five New Zealand winners at a Toronto meeting on Monday, was the first Dominion swimmer to break 50sec for the distance. He swam 49.95ec before the team left and again after arriving in Canada. He telephoned his parents after the Toronto meeting and passed on the news of his record time in a 20min $5O conversation.—N.Z.P.A., Rotorua.

CHAMPION OMITTED The Olympic hurdles goldmedallist. Miss M. Caird, was a shock omission from the Australian team announced last night for the Pacific Conference Games in Tokyo on September 27 and 28. Miss P. Kilborn, aged 30, who was beaten into second place by Miss Caird in the Mexico City 80 metres hurdles final last October, has been included.

The 17-year-old Miss Caird has suffered a foot injury since returning from Mexico and has not regained her Olympic form. She finished fourth behind Miss Kilborn in the Australian 100 metres hurdles championship a few weeks ago. The 35-member (24 men, 11 women) team includes several other surprises. G. Crouch, unexpected winner of . the national 1500 metres tide in March, failed tn make the team, as did A. Crawley, sixth in the Olympic long jump last year and Australia’s best performer in this event.—N.Z.P.A., Sydney.
