Lamb Popular With Japanese
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 29. Japanese workmen building the New Zealand pavilion at Expo 70 In Osaka asked for extra helpings of New Zealand lamb when the Meat Board arranged a barbecue at the Expo restaurant this week. “This is a good omen for our restaurant at Expo." the chairman of the board's Expo committee (Mr N. B. Flppard) said later.
The Meat Board said in a statement today that Ito representatives in Japan for Expo discussions made a special trip to the Expo site to thank construction workers for keeping the job ahead of schedule. To mark the occasion Japanese girls served bar- | becued lamb cooked on the site by Japanese chefs. They | were helped by girls em- ” ployed by the board for supermarket and department store lamb demonstrations. The board and Government representatives were amazed at the response of tbe workmen, who had never tasted lamb before.
Many disposed of three or four helpings of the bacon-like strips, mixed
with onions and seasoned with garlic. The board's promotion officer (Mr D. Hayward) ■aid the barbecue had proved the hoard's belief that once given the chance to taste lamb cooked In a style to which they were accustomed the Japanese people would accept and enjoy It
