NEW MOVE TO OUST S. AFRICA
(N Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright > LONDON. Poland and Hungary have tabled a motion to expel South Africa at the annual meeting of Davis Cup-playing tennis nations in London in July.
Mr Basil Reay. Secretary of the Internationa! Lawn Tennis Association, visited South Africa last week and made clear to tennis authorities there the opposition against South Africa in the cup because of the Republic’s apartheid policy. Mr Reay said yesterday: “Countries are now objecting to South Africa’s presence in the European zone, because it is they and not South Africa who are being penalised after being drawn against the South Africans. “It is very sad but I think with this increasing number of nations antagonistic towards South .Africa, they will be driven to vote against South Africa being allowed in the competition.” South Africa seems certain to reach the Section A final
' of the European zone in this ■ year's competition after playing only one match. The South Africans beat ' Iran in the first round in Cape Town last week and face a second round meeting with ' either Poland or Hungary Both refuse to meet the South Africans, whose third ; round opponents. Czechoslovakia or Denmark, adopt the 1 same position. If they do have two walkovers. then South Africa would go into the section final, where its likely opponents would be Britain. In Section B. the first round ' tie between Spain and Rhodesia has had to be switched from Monte Carlo to Lisbon as the French have refused travel visas to the Rhodesians from Nice to Monaco. Mr I Reay said.
