VETERANS’ GOLF
Title-Holder Leading Last year’s champion. Mrs! L. A. Pine (Palmerston North), again set the pace when the New Zealand women's veterans’ golf tour-i nament began at Avondale i yesterday. In the 18-hole qualifying’ stroke round for the Curtis, Cup. Mrs Pine beat Mrs I. D.' James (Timaru) on a countback after both players had returned rounds of 83.
Today, the leading 18 quail-' fiers will begin the match! play event for the Veterans’ Cup. which is held by Mrs Pine The remaining 108 competitors will be divided into sections, according to their qualifying places. Players from as far afield as Auckland and Bluff are at Avondale for the three day tournament, and although most players were a little uncertain in the heavy conditions yesterday, the standard of play in the next two days promises to be high Mrs E. Harris (Wanaka). who is on five, is the lowest handicapped player, while Mrs A. I. Charles (Christ-1 church), the mother of R. J. Charles, is on six and Mrs C. J Ward (Christchurch) is on seven Another celebrated golfer of former years in the field is Miss E.
