Attempt To Get New Date
Alternative dates for the return Canterbury • Wellington match in (liristchurch are being investigated by the two Rugby unions to avoid a clash with the inter-island game in Wellington.
both games were set down for September 13, but the Canterbury union suggested September 16 or 17 as alternatives for the inter-pro-vincial match.
In a letter to the management committee of the Canterbury union last evening, the Wellington union said it was giving serious consideration to the two dates, because of the co-operation shown by the Canterbury delegates at the New Zealand body's annual meeting.
However. Wellington advanced yet another alternative. October 4. a date which, it said, would be more beneficial financially to both unions, particularly if one held the Ranfurly Shield. "Naturally, it would not be a shield match, as no such games are permitted after the end of September,” said the letter. Mr J. Storey said the Sep-|
tember dates might result in a financial loss, but the chairman (Mr C. H, McPhail) replied that public interest would have faded by October. The October date had the virtue of being only seven days after Canterbury’s shield challenge, but it would encroach on the cricket season, said Mr J. K. Torrance.
The committee decided to approach the Victory Park Board and the Canterbury Cricket Association to see if Lancaster Park would be I available on October 4. SELECTORS RETURNED The Canterbury B and Colts' selectors were reelected in ballots last evening. Messrs D. M. Findlay (forwards) and P. Clark (backs) were returned as the B team selectors, and Messrs R. R. Eastgate (forwards) and L. P. Foster (backs) won approval as the Colts’ selectors. Gallop. was regraded from senior ' to senior reserve.
Junior Parada.—The management committee gave Its blessings to a Junior Advisory Board I proposal for a parade of underweight teams at Lancaster Park [before the grand final of the Harewood Trophy competition. If everyone turned out. there would be about 2530 boys on! parade, said Mr J. Storey. 1
