Ashburton To Be Venue The 1969 sponsored South Island chess championships have been allotted to Ashburton. They will be held in Ashburton Public Library community rooms during Queen’s Birthday week-end. and will be officially opened by the Mayor (Mr G. Glassey) at 8.45 a.m. on Saturday, Mav 31. The director of play will be Mr W. H. Fransen, secretary treasurer of the Ashburton Chess Club. Prize money totalling nearly $3OO will be at stake over the three grades of the championships if entries exceed 15 players in each grade. Entries will close on May--17.
