Naenae Pupils In Chch Concert
A party of 104 pupils of Naenae College, Lower Hutt, will arrive in Christchurch next Sunday to perform in a concert with pupils from Burnside High School and Cottesmore Convent
Announcing this last evening, the music master at Burnside High School (Mr V. A. Ellena) said that although an inter-change of sports' teams between secondary schools was common, there was little, if any, precedent for such a visit on musical grounds.
The Wellington party, pupils from third to sixth forms, will be accompanied by their music master (Mr P. Brown) and headmaster (Mr D. Wood), a former head of the social studies department at Burnside. They have raised the money for their own fares and will be billeted by Bumside pupils. They are members of the Naenae College ehoir, band and orchestra.
In all, about 300 pupils will take part in the massed concert on Monday evening.
a highlight of which will be a version of the main theme of the last movement of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, using all the voices and instruments of the group.
The proceeds from the concert will go towards buying a set of timpani for the high school. Instruments have been lent by other Christchurch schools for the concert, Cashmere High School supplying large instruments such as double bases and cellos, to eliminate the need for the Naenae pupils to bring their own, and Shirley Boys' High School has offered the use of timpani. The concert will be in the nature of a farewell to the headmaster at Burnside (Mr C. Cross), who will retire on May 9. Mr Cross had taken a great interest in music at the school and has taken the orchestra for rehearsals, Mr Ellena said. When Mr Cross was teaching science at Papanui High School he also taught music there.
