Hay In Demand Baled hay is in strong demand after the long dry summer and autumn. A stock and station firm reported yesterday that lucerne hay had been sold for $1.20 a bale at a clearing sale at Styx. Meadow hay brought 95c and oaten hay 80c. Lucerne hay was sold for $1.25 a bale at an Ashburton sale last week and similar hay is reported to have been sold at 51.50 a bale at Amberley. In a normal season lucerne brings 60c to 65c a bale and meadow 50c to 60c. Waiinairi Fires The Waimairi County Council's contribution to the running of the Christchurch Metropolitan Fire Board’s fire - fighting expenses amounted to about one-third |of the City Council’s contriIbution, said Mr D. B. Rich, a member of the board and (chairman of the county council, at the board's annual meeting yesterday. But fire calls to the county numbered about only one-fifth of the calls within the city.
