Pigeon Flying

Lofts from all parts of New Zealand were represented in the annua] Rothmans South Island futurity pigeon race. Five hundred and seventy birds were liberated from Picton at 10.15 a,m. on a Saturday in overcast conditions and a southerly wind. The pigeons split into three flocks and headed inland where they encountered bad weather. As a result the race had to be continued till the Sunday and only six birds were timed.

E. Barker, of Christchurch, was the owner of the first two birds, both of which recorded 446.7 yards per minute. Another bird owned by Barker was third with a time of 446.6 y.p.m. Fourth was D. Anthony (444.3 y.p.m ), then G. Massie (441.1 y.p.m.) and L. Starling (430.4 |y.p.m.).
