300 Dead In One Town
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) RIO DE JANEIRO, March 18. Rain beat down on rescuers today in the flood-battered north-east Brazilian town of Sao Jose da Laje, where nearly 300 people have been killed and two-thirds of the population are homeless. Alagoas State officials said the town had been “virtually wiped off the map,” more than 5000 homes having been destroyed. Casualties were high because many people were caught in their beds when the floodwaters swept down early on Saturday, quickly submerging low-lying houses.
